New technology allows helps detect sight-threatening changes from

Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Macular Degeneration is a vision-threatening disease that affects 20 percent of Americans over age 65! It has two stages, the less vision threatening dry stage, and the rapidly deteriorating wet stage.

When a patient is diagnosed with macular degeneration, it is imperative that he be monitored regularly for changes. While AMD is not a blinding disease, central, detailed vision can be affected enough to make it impossible to read or recognize faces.

Traditionally, patients were given a printed grid to take home and look at on a weekly basis. If the macular degeneration progressed, it was expected that the patient would notice increased distortions in the grid. In theory, this should work, but there are very big problems with this test. Foremost is our brain's ability to fix what isn't right. Our brain knows the lines in the grid are suppose to be straight, and that all the lines should be present and without breaks. If the damage to the macula is causing distortions in the grid, the patient might not notice them because the brain is filling in the gaps and "fixing" the distortions. Consequently, early signs of damaging changes might not be found.

The Foresee PHP remedies this problem by presenting a computer driven series of lines designed to find distortions without your brain realizing they are there. Additionally, all tests done on an eye can be compared over time to see if changes are getting worse.

While there is no treatment for dry macular degeneration, wonderful drugs are available to treat wet AMD if caught early enough.  Catching wet macular degeneration when it first starts is the best way to save your vision and the Foresee PHP is designed to do just that. It is a quick and painless exam that can save your vision, takes only about 15 minutes, is covered by insurance, and does not require dilation!
